Buy Nothing Day 2019

Try a personal cooling off period on Buy Nothing Day.

It’s easy to ‘buy just for the sake of buying’ says Rachel Smith, Author of Underspent “We’ve all popped to the shops for a pint of milk and gone home with $20 or $30 worth of ‘stuff’ we didn’t even know we wanted or needed an hour before”.

The most common ‘impulse buys’ are chocolate, clothes, takeaways, coffee, books and beauty products.

.This Friday is Buy Nothing Day and the two rules for the day are simple:

1. Challenge yourself to switch off from spending for a few hours.

2. Try not to spend unnecessarily for one day. Why do we all shop and spend so much?

Rachel has interviewed men and women across Australia who said that they never felt satisfied with what they already had, boredom and loneliness.

What works for Rachel is ‘Pausing Before Purchasing’, to make sure a want really is a need.

Buy Nothing Day is Friday 29 November
