From husbands, homes and holidays to homelessness

Homelessness is becoming an enormous issue for women in Australia, as highlighted by SBS’s Insight program last week. Women are house-sitting, living in cars or staying with friends, and these are women who have come from ‘traditional’ middle-class lives – with an education, employment, husbands, holidays and children. Most had experienced an unexpected life change – divorce, redundancy or illness, things that can happen to anyone. The truth is, women of all ages, whether married or single, need to understand everything about their spending, take control of their finances and build a safety net so that they have cash in the bank for unexpected life events/changes. And we should stop overspending frivolously, a habit perpetuated by boredom, loneliness, low self-esteem and societal pressures. It’s impossible to save when disaster strikes, so we should all save something, so we’re ready and prepared for anything.
